Flying high: brace of silvers in Mexico

British Sailing Team kite foilers Ellie Aldridge and Connor Bainbridge kicked off their 2020 seasons in style with a pair of silvers at the Hydrofoil Pro Tour opener in La Ventana.

After a winter of training in the Mexican beach resort, Aldridge and Bainbridge led the British charge as the kite foiling season commenced.

For Bainbridge, the 2019 Formula Kite world bronze medallist, it was the ideal start to his bid for a world title in 2020 after a difficult few months on the water.

“It’s been a super tricky winter for me and I definitely struggled in the post 2019 season to find my feet and really get a solid direction of where I wanted to be coming into the 2020 season,” he said.

“However, over the past two months I have managed to get into a really strong training routine. It feels amazing to see the hard work pay off with a second-place finish and a great way to kick off my season.

“It’s going to be a very long season with my major outcome regattas being at the end of the year so I am super excited to continue my current momentum throughout the upcoming events and training blocks.”

For Aldridge, a product of the #Kite4Gold talent programme, it’s another piece of silverware for the trophy cabinet following a stellar 2019 season that saw her crowned European champion.

She added: “I’m so happy to come away with silver at my first event of the year at the end of our Mexico 2020 pilgrimage. It’s going to be a big year!”
