What, where and when?
Formula Kite European Championships. The Kite Euros are in Montpellier, France, from the 6-12 September with both men’s and women’s champions crowned.
From the British Sailing Team:
There’s also some youth riders in action: Mattia Maini, Francesca Maini and Ella Saunders.
What’s the lowdown?
This is the first major event the kites have had since it was announced that men and women would get race for separate medals at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games – because of this it’s the first time the men and women will race in separate fleets.
Ellie Aldridge is the current European champion so she will be looking to defend her crown among a fleet that continues to improve and grow since it was confirmed as an Olympic discipline.
What they say
“I’m very excited for the European championships to start this week. It’s the first individual event, racing without boys since kiteboarding got given two Olympic medals, so it’ll be really interesting to see how everyone goes without the chaos of all the crazy boys getting in the way!
“We’ve been here training for a week already and the weather has been very up and down. Some days are glamour – 10-12knots, sunshine – and others raining and thunderstorms. Let’s see what’s on the cards this week and hopefully it’ll be a full week of exciting racing.” – Ellie Aldridge
