Just like many young athletes, Matilda Nicholls dreams of standing on the podium at an Olympic Games – but unlike others she has had some exposure to the sport through some legends.
From very early memories of sailing with her father and grandfather in Suffolk, Matilda’s sailing career really began when the late Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson came to stay at the newly relocated Nicholls family residence in Bermuda with a little of the sailing desire rubbing off from the champion.
With the family returning to the UK, Matilda was then taken under the wing of the late, great Martin Boatman as she continued her sailing journey through the Laser youth pathway.
The exciting talent reached fever pitch in 2019 when Matilda won the Laser Radial Youth World Championships and followed that up with both the Yachts & Yachting Youth Sailor of the Year and the Yachting Journalist Association Youth Sailor of the Year awards.
Even with ambitions of Olympic medals, Matilda also just wants to be able to encourage her friends and family to get involved with the sport she loves.
