Date of birth: 11 May 1998
Sailing in Mirror dinghies with his parents at the age of five with a smile on his face was enough for Daniel Whiteley’s mum and dad to sign him up to a sailing course in his North Wales home.
From there Whiteley showed promise in the Optimist to become part of the Welsh squad before moving in to the 420.
The Welshman’s future seemed destined to be in the singlehanded classes though when podium places became more frequent in the Laser Radial, including a bronze for Great Britain at the 2015 Youth Worlds.
A step up to the Laser Standard was coupled with a Crossfit training regime to boost the youngsters size and strength to withstand the bigger rig and now Whiteley is part of a strong Laser British Sailng Team squad.
Outside of the boat Whiteley is currently studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bristol.
