Sam Whaley’s rise through the sailing ranks has been rapid. A self-confessed late starter at the age of 12, Whaley’s first experience of sailing was not a good one, in fact he hated it.
Since that less than impressive beginning Whaley has found a strong love for the sport to the point where at 16 he had already designed and built his own boat.
In the years in between Whaley fast tracked his racing career with a national competitive debut at the age of 14 in 2011 and going one step further to compete internationally a year later before joining the British Sailing Team ranks.
Off the water don’t be surprised if you see a future Whaley in the international spotlight following in the footsteps of his idol Elon Musk with his tech and coding savvy attracting the attention of Microsoft to the then 18-year-old. Whaley had a tough decision to make though – stay with Microsoft or focus on sailing full time. We think he choose correctly…
