Kites take flight for World Championships
Final major regatta before Paris incoming
What, where and when?
The Formula Kite World Championships take place in Hyeres, France, from Tuesday May 14 to Sunday May 19.
Who?
The British Sailing Team’s kite crew will be out in force in Hyeres. Unfortunately Connor Bainbridge, our newest and final Team GB member, won’t be among them – more on that below. Paris-bound Ellie Aldridge will lead the women’s contingent that includes Maddy Anderson, Lily Young and Katie Dabson. In the men’s fleet Mattia Maini, Arthur Brown and Sam Dickinson will fly the flag for GB.
The lowdown
This is it: the last major event before Paris 2024. Once this one’s done there won’t be any other regattas bar some warm-up events in Marseille, so it’s a crucial test against the world’s best before the greatest show on earth begins. Fresh from winning silver at Semaine Olympique Française earlier this month – finishing ahead of arch nemesis Lauriane Nolot in the process – Ellie Aldridge will be looking for another podium performance on the same waters. The same can’t be said, however, for Connor Bainbridge, who suffered a minor injury during a crash in training last week and will sit this one out.
Anything else?
While all eyes will be on Ellie Aldridge, any one of the British kite girls are capable of coming home with a medal. Team GB selection guarantees a spot in Marseille, but it doesn’t guarantee invincibility.
How do I follow the regatta?
The official website featuring results and the full entry list is here. If you want to track the progress of the Brits the best place to do so is the British Sailing Team social media channels. Each day we will keep you posted on results, and feature the best photos the event has to offer.
