Win Micky Beckett’s Paris 2024 boat for £10
Own a slice of the Olympics for a tenner
Team GB athlete Micky Beckett is raffling the dinghy he raced at the Paris 2024 Olympics – and tickets are only £10.
For just a tenner you could get your hands on the ILCA 7 (formerly Laser Standard) – worth £8,700 – that Beckett competed with in Marseille.
And to top it off, Beckett will deliver the boat to the winner in person.
Beckett is raffling the boat to raise funds for the Andrew Simpson Foundation, which provides young people with the opportunity to get into sailing.
The charity, based on the site of the British Sailing Team’s HQ in Portland, Dorset, was set up in memory of Olympian Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson, who lost his life in a sailing accident in 2013.
“I never met Andrew Simpson, but he always looked calm and humble despite being an incredible sailor,” said Beckett, who lives on Portland but hails from Solva, Pembrokeshire.
“He was the kind of person I saw on TV who made me want to sail more, to be more.
“He did an incredible job of connecting the grassroots of the sport to the very top level by being so passionate about sailing.
“In the spirit of Bart I’m giving someone the chance to win my boat from the Olympics – with the exact same gear I was using – and so bring a little bit of that Olympic magic back to the UK.
“On the way we will raise money for the Foundation, so they can continue their incredible work getting people on the water who otherwise wouldn’t have the chance.”
The ILCA 7, which was brand new for Paris 2024, was donated by Ovington Boats, and the raffle is supported by Tideway Wealth and Retirement.
As well as the hull, the winner will receive its spars, foils, tiller and extension and a blank sail. Also included are control lines from Southeast Sailboats, top and bottom covers and a launching trolley.
Beckett’s Olympics sail, which bears the Paris 2024 branding on it, will be handed out as a separate prize.
“Even if you’ve never sailed before, especially if you’ve never sailed before, this raffle is for you,” Beckett added.
“All you have to do is buy a ticket, then with some luck I will be delivering this boat to you in a couple of weeks’ time.
“You could learn to sail in a fantastic boat for beginners, race it at the highest level or donate it to your nearest sailing club.
“It’s an incredible opportunity that won’t come round again – what’s to lose?”
